Scaling & Root Planing
Gum disease is primarily caused by a buildup of bacteria-filled plaque and tartar on the teeth below the gum line, and scaling & root planing is a type of cleaning specifically designed to remove it. Once the plaque and tartar have been cleared away (scaling), the roots of the teeth are then smoothed out and slightly reshaped (root planing). This makes it more difficult for bacteria to accumulate near the gums in the future, plus this facilitates faster healing.
Antibiotic Therapy
As gum disease progresses, bacteria can actually form pockets along the gum line that are extremely difficult to clean with manual tools alone. To ensure no bacteria is left behind, our team can apply a topical antibiotic to your gums that quickly dries and then slowly dissolves over the course of a few days. This allows the medicine to seep deep into the pockets and completely disinfect them, plus this can help reduce the size of these pockets, which prevents reinfection.
Laser Gum Disease Therapy
For advanced cases of gum disease, instead of peeling back the gum tissue so the roots of the teeth can be cleaned (which is the traditional approach), our team can instead utilize a dental laser. This small device uses a beam of light to quickly vaporize harmful bacteria below the gum line without causing any irritation to the gums themselves. This makes for a much more comfortable treatment, and it’s so gentle that most patients don’t even need local anesthetic!
