Should I Change My Diet to Take Care of My Veneers?
October 3, 2024
Porcelain veneers are a fantastic treatment for concealing your dental flaws. After these thin, shell-like facades are adhered to the front-facing sides of your teeth, all onlookers will see is a row of shiny pearly whites! You recognize the Hollywood glam veneers can offer, and want to make sure your results last as long as possible. Does that mean changing up your diet so you don’t damage the porcelain?
Making strategic food choices is a good way to ensure your veneers’ longevity, but you might not be as restricted as you think! Keep reading to learn more.
Your Diet with Temporary Veneers
Not everyone realizes this, so it’s important to first address the fact that while you wait for your official veneers to be crafted in the dental lab, you’ll have to wear a set of temporary veneers. They’re only meant to be worn for a week or two, so they’re not as durable as the final product. It’s best to stick to soft, tender foods like eggs, mashed potatoes, pasta, and chicken, because chipping a temporary veneer could expose your teeth to sensitivities.
The Permanent Veneer Menu
When you transition to your permanent set of veneers, you can safely eat almost anything you want! Excessively hard foods, such as popcorn kernels and nuts, can still chip the porcelain, though, and are best avoided. Dark liquids can present another problem, although not because of damage. Richly colored drinks like wine and coffee will stain your veneers if consumed too frequently.
Other Ways to Take Care of Your Veneers
There are other ways you can help your veneers go the distance, such as:
- Brushing your teeth twice daily
- Flossing at least once per day
- Rinsing your mouth after meals
- Wearing an athletic mouthguard
- Visiting your dentist every six months
Daily oral hygiene will go a long way towards preventing gum disease, which could weaken your gums and cause your teeth – and cosmetics – to fall out. Your dentist’s professional cleanings, though, can remove hardened bacteria known as plaque. If you visit them every six months, they can also keep an eye on your oral health and take care of potential issues early. Consider them your partner for maintaining the beauty of your porcelain veneers!
